Protect All Children
My grandfather, Nicoangelo Aloisio, in 1920. This was his passport photo.
Grandpa Angelo, my mother’s dad, immigrated to the United States from Italy at the age of 15. He worked hard washing dishes in a cafeteria in Buffalo, New York and eventually became an executive chef. His specialty was Clams Casino. My father’s family escaped the progroms in Eastern Europe to settle in the New York City area. Great-grandpa Louie worked in the garment industry and great-grandpa George was a typesetter. Both sides of my family emphasized the importance of education and hard work. The wisdom that they passed on to me helped to facilitate my success in life.
Therefore, I find it incomprehensible that the current administration is trying to deport the children of immigrants, many who have no recollection of ever being in their country of origin. Their undocumented status should not be held against them, and the United States has a moral obligation to create legal avenues for them to stay in this county. I support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and will fight for a “Clean DREAM Act” if elected. Young Dreamers contribute substantially to the economic progress of our country. As such, deporting these individuals would not only be morally bankrupt; doing so would also severely damage our economy.
Health Care is a Human Right
As a child, I had a great advantage of having a father who was a medical doctor. When I was sick, either he took care of me right away or I was seen by another doctor quickly. I was privileged in this regard, but I also understand that not all children are as fortunate. The 9 million children and low-income pregnant women currently covered under the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are in jeopardy of losing adequate health care unless the program is funded beyond March 2018. Approximately 70,000 children in Nevada receive health care through CHIP.
No one should every have to worry about paying medical bills. As your representative, I will fight to ensure that health care funding for children is secured at the federal level.
